18th Division, including 7th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 55 Brigade, arrived in France at end of July, 1915 and after a period of training moved to the Somme area, recently take over from the French Army. On 31st December, 1915, 7th Royal West Surrey (Queens) moved into the front line in sub-sector D3 in front of Becourt. On 4th January, 1916, their positions were hit by about 15 heavy trench mortar bombs which killed 3 men, including Albert Player. |
